While possibly aesthetically questionable, maybe buying jewelry from Wal-Mart isn’t the worst idea ever…?  The mega-retailer announced this month their new Love, Earth jewelry line and it’s companion online site that enables customers to research the supply chain history of every fine metal and jewel in the collection.  This is coming on the heels of Wal-Mart’s long-standing effort to work sustainability into every aspect of their business, and it just continues to get better and better.

We are still anti-diamond in general, but this stuff is cheap and ethical and part of a democratically-minded sustainability movement affordable for everyone (the Tree of Life is only $28!)  Plus they support US mines which is good news for local economies.  10% of the jewelry sold at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and in the online stores will meet the new ethical standards of the Love, Earth collection by 2010.  Now all you need to do is get your hands on an empty Tiffany’s box, get the bling at good old Wal-Mart, and you’re looking pretty good!
